Kia Ora. I am Kamsi from Room 10, Glen Innes School. As part of the activities for the Summer Learning Journey, I watched some videos about Aotearoa’s Giant Centipedes. Then I made a copy of the Google Drawing, completed the math questions and drafted a question which you guys can try out. In the maths questions, a fact I learnt was that to answer the question 1/5 of 100, you just had to divide a 100 by 5 and then times the answer by 1. It was quite fun and I liked that I was able to think up a question. Please feel free to give me feedback.

  1. Kia ora Kamsi,

Welcome back! It is wonderful to see your hard work on the Aotearoa’s Giant Centipede maths challenge.

You clearly explained your method for finding a fraction of a number: “a fact I learnt was that to answer the question 1/5 of 100, you just had to divide a 100 by 5 and then times the answer by 1.”. That is a perfect mathematical strategy! Your tally chart is completely correct, showing great accuracy in your skip counting and division.

I also liked your custom word problem: “If a Giant Centipede crawls 3 meters in a day, how many meters does it crawl in a week?”. Your answer of 21 is spot on (3×7 = 21).

While centipedes can move quite fast to catch their prey, they actually spend much of their time hiding under logs or leaf litter during the day to stay cool and moist.

Since you are getting so good at these maths problems, if a centipede could crawl 5 metres in a day, how many metres would it travel over a fortnight (two weeks)?
